Heritage Week 2003 - Markham | ||
The Markham Museum and Historic Village is a unique site that brings to life the sights, sounds and tastes of years gone by. Visitors can travel through time from the 1820s to the 1940s and tour historic homes, a church and shops – including the Land Transportation building, the Maxwell Log Cabin and Chapman House. Given this year's Heritage Day theme of "The heritage of our town," this location proved to be ideal for our Heritage Week event. In addition, Ontario Minister of Culture David H. Tsubouchi used our signature event to proclaim Heritage Week. Speakers included: Mayor Don Cousens, Town of Markham; The Honourable David H. Tsubouchi, Ontario Minister of Culture; Gunter Langhorst, Board chair for the Markham Museum; Elizabeth Plashkes, Chair for the Doors Open Markham Committee; and Sis Bunting Weld, Board member for the Trust. Featured at the event were presentations to the 2002 recipients of the Young Heritage Leaders and Heritage Community Recognition Program. In the Town of Markham in 2002, there were four recipients of the Heritage Community Recognition Program recognition certificates. Following these presentations, Young Heritage Leader certificates were presented to the 748 Markham Army Cadet Corps for their contributions to natural heritage conservation in the Markham area. Following the speeches and presentations, guests made their way to the Church basement for a catered lunch. After lunch, the Museum was open for more visits. Horse-drawn wagon rides were also available for guests to enjoy.
