Revitalizing a cultural landscape

Allan Gardens, Toronto (24K)Another way the Trust commits to heritage garden conservation is by revitalizing a cultural landscape. The rehabilitation of an historic landscape – combining new interventions with conservation and restoration – helps to create a renewed sense of purpose and life for that garden or landscape.

One such example of this kind of project was the revitalization of Allan Gardens in downtown Toronto.

The City of Toronto established an advisory committee to guide development of a long-term master plan for the revitalization of Allan Gardens. The Trust participated as the primary advocate for the preservation of cultural landscape features, and for the design of a master plan that is informed by history.

A conservation management plan and a marketing and development study were completed. The historic University of Toronto Botany Glass House that was under threat of demolition has been preserved through relocation to Allan Gardens as the centerpiece of a new children's teaching garden. Through the Ontario Heritage Trust, the Donner Foundation provided funds to support the project. This success has provided momentum for the overall revitalization project, the goal of which is to create a place of horticultural excellence that builds on the great heritage of the site.
