Mary Ann Shadd Cary 1823-1893

An American black, Mary Ann Shadd Cary established the Provincial Freeman in Windsor in 1853. She moved the influential newspaper to Chatham two years later. After the American Civil War, Shadd Cary returned to the United States to work for racial equality.
