A native of Holland and a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, Van Egmond was one of the most prominent early settlers in the Huron Tract. A strong supporter of William Lyon Mackenzie, he led the ill-fated skirmish at Montgomery's Tavern during the Rebellion of 1837.
