History & restoration

Marcus Loew built Loew's Yonge Street and Winter Garden Theatres as the Canadian flagship of his American theatre chain, which by 1914 controlled nearly 100 theatres. (25K)Restoration of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre was the largest project of its kind in Canada. At this National Historic Site, you can bask in the gilded elegance of the Elgin Theatre, and then go upstairs to gaze in awe at the leafy ceiling of the Winter Garden Theatre – seven storeys above the Elgin. Tours of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre reveal artifacts from its vaudeville days, such as a silent-film projector, spectacular vaudeville scenery and a restored vaudeville-era dressing room. The Centre is the last operating double-decker theatre in the world.
