Who owns the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre?
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is owned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust, a not-for-profit agency of the Ministry of Culture. The Trust led the Theatre Centre's 2½-year, $29-million restoration between 1987 and 1989.

When was the Theatre Centre built?
The Elgin Theatre (originally known as Loew's Yonge Street Theatre) opened on December 15, 1913 and the Winter Garden opened two months later, on February 16, 1914.


What is a "double-decker" theatre?
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is the last operating double-decker theatre in the world – and the only one ever built in Canada. Double-decker means that the building contains two separate theatres – one built on top of the other. The Elgin Theatre is the lower theatre (with a seating capacity of 1,561), while the Winter Garden sits directly above it (with a seating capacity of 992).

The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is a live performance venue. A variety of entertainment is offered, including musicals, comedies, dramas, operas, dance, concerts and lectures. Do you offer guided tours of the Theatre Centre?
Yes, guided tours are available Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Group tours are available by reservation – call 416-314-2871. French-language tours are also available by appointment – call 416-325-5015. More information …
