Ontario Heritage Trust hosts gala in honour of Lincoln Alexander

TORONTOToday, the Ontario Heritage Trust hosted a gala fundraiser in celebration of The Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander's 85th birthday and the Trust's 40th anniversary. Funds raised will go toward the Trust's Lincoln M. Alexander Legacy Fund in support of heritage conservation.

The Travel Through Time Gala was held at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, which is owned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust. Ken Shaw of CTV News was the emcee for the evening, with entertainment provided by Michael Burgess, Jani and Kristina Autio Dancers, Ritmika Rythmic Gymnasts, Opera Atelier, and Gerald Isaac and Ruth Morawetz (Canadian Cabaret).

"I am honoured that so many esteemed friends and colleagues were able to attend this evening – not only to celebrate my birthday, but also to raise the profile of heritage conservation," said Mr. Alexander, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "This event has meant a great deal to me personally, and will also make a significant impact in helping to ensure that Ontario's heritage is preserved for future generations."

On hand to celebrate Mr. Alexander's many accomplishments over the past 85 years were The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, as well as former Lieutenant Governor The Honourable Henry N.R. Jackman.

"It is a great pleasure to have been a part of this special birthday celebration for Linc," said Mr. Bartleman. "He has been a role model for me, always pursuing the causes that matter the most to him, no matter how challenging. He has overcome poverty and prejudice, and his steadfast dedication and uncompromising ability to achieve have encouraged all Ontarians, all Canadians."

Mr. Alexander first became affiliated with the Ontario Heritage Trust when he was appointed to the Board of Directors in December 2001. In 2004, he was designated Chairman, and was reappointed this March. Since 1967, the Ontario Heritage Trust has played a key role in keeping the province's heritage alive and meaningful. Today, the Trust continues to be Ontario's lead heritage agency, responsible for identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting built, cultural and natural heritage across the province.

"The 40th anniversary of the Ontario Heritage Trust is an important milestone for heritage conservation in Ontario," said Caroline Di Cocco, Minister of Culture. "During his tenure with the Trust, Mr. Alexander has made valuable contributions to promoting heritage conservation. I was delighted to attend this celebration in his honour and to convey the province's appreciation for the Trust's accomplishments."

In recognition of Mr. Alexander's contributions to the province, the government has proposed that the third Wednesday in February – which falls during Ontario's annual Heritage Week – as Lincoln M. Alexander Day in public schools across the province.
