Cultural Wednesdays at The National Gallery of Canada
A new influenza pandemic threatens humanity. Our governments are deploying impressive resources in order to combat the H1N1 influenza virus, but uncertainty persists. This pandemic reminds us of the Spanish influenza of 1918 and 1919, since 90 years later we must face the same fears. Obviously, medicine has made enormous strides since then and, compared to today, prevention was non-existent at the start of the 20th century. We seize on current events to re-examine Spanish influenza and to see how the nation's capital dealt with this pandemic that affected half the human population and killed millions. The lecture will be delivered by Michel Prévost, Chief Archivist at the University of Ottawa and President of the Société d'histoire de l'Outaouais. Entrance fee is $5 for non-members of the Mercredis culturels (Cultural Wednesdays).
